Not as bad as a lot of people say, but far from perfect.

The above video is from my second time playing No Man's Sky. I did try a third time, but didn't stream any footage. This is around the time I kind of gave up on the game.

That's not to say it's bad, because it isn't. The way that milestones are presented to you, and for tangible and kind of neat things in an exploration game, are quite good. The titles and art style are pretty stylish and hearken back to 70s sci-fi, which is neat in a way. I'm just not an exploration game kind of guy. Now, there are other modes now present since the many updates to the game, and I can see the draw of them, but it is just not for me.

Here are the negatives. There is a complete lack of accessible direction on what to do next. Even in a game like Don't starve, which gives practically no direction, it somehow provides the player with just enough information, resources and sparse guidance to at least get you moving and surviving for a few days. No Man's Sky makes it exceedingly difficult I found to locate resources, like zinc, that are needed to really get moving. The planets are sparsely populated, with not much of interest after you get past the first few. It makes it glaringly clear that the game can be boiled down to "collect resources here to travel to the next place, then collect resources there to get to the next, ad nauseum. "

I should note, if you like that, then go for it. I can see a lot of the draw to the game, but I just felt no real need to explore further than I did. It's a neat game, but i traded it in for further opportunities to play games that draw me in much further, and motivate me to complete them.

here's some footage from when the game kind of had me, the beginning.

Enjoy.
