As with my previous showcases I am going to try and provide a decent overview of my experiences with characters, such as today’s post on Genji, from a new player’s standpoint in a natural setting. As a result, the video provided is unadulterated and very noobish. I’m ok with that, as I want everyone to see these characters through the eyes of someone that isn’t necessarily terrible at the game, but also is not in the competitive space…. Yet.

Genji is an odd duck to me. He should be right in my wheelhouse, as I loved playing as the more more in your face run and gun characters in Battleborn, and played my warlock in Destiny as a high risk high reward character with great success. I did well in this playthrough of Uprising, but I was by no means good. I chalk this up to a busy weekend, a tired dude, and being very out of practice. Beyond that though, I think he’s great.

His balance is quite good. His powerful and quick shuriken are tempered by his abysmally slow reload time. That’s really ok though, as if you have good aim, his shuriken seem to be quite lethal. I tried out the fanned alt fire shuriken, but had zero success with it. I’m not really sure what the use is, and may look into it later. As it stands, I don’t feel I am missing out on much. I do quite fine using the skills he has beyond the 3 star fanned assault. Speaking of, his dash forward move is really quite useful. This seemed especially so in Uprising, as it allowed me to pass through the shielded characters, attack from behind and possibly turn them around for the Bastion on my team to make quick work of them. Thank Jebus we had a good Mercy player on the team (or should that be thank Mercy?...). She saved my butt when I became overzealous and charged into battle ala Leroy Jenkins.

Which brings me to the next point. If you are going to be Genji, you need to be mobile at all times. He is not a bullet sponge, nor should he be. I will be trying him out more in the regular Overwatch modes, but I feel like I will need to up my game significantly to be able to do any damage and walk away from a fracas. His climb ability would definitely come in handy there for sneak attacks and getting out in a rush.

What I ADORED about him was his ultimate attack. Coupling this with a sneak attack using his climbing ability would be lethal, but I really became quite fond of using his dash to close the gap on a crowd and cleaning up. Got me into trouble a few times, but man was it exhilarating!

What it really comes down to with him though, is practice. If you are going to use him in a group of seasoned players, they are going to demand you play well with Genji if you use him. But if you can get somewhat decent with him, I feel he is well worth it.

Stay tuned for more footage from Uprising, as well as the next character showcase in the next few days!
