Dragon Quest Builders (PSVita): We Built This City on Minecraft’s Bones!

Barring the Glass Tiger Reference above, Dragon Quest Builders really isn’t Minecraft, but owes a lot to it. A lot being of course, earth, clay steel, etc all need to come in easily handled cubes and you can smack most things with a stick to get other things (read: resources, ya perve!). It all ends there though, and that’s good because Builders has charm for days. I have zero regrets getting this on the Vita as well. The game screams “take me with you everywhere and don’t stop playing me!” It has great adult themed jokes, cute characters, great mechanics, easy to grasp combat, wonderful world/character design, perfect quest lengths for short spurt playing, engaging enough to have long play sessions without boredom….. sounds good right? It is, but there are caveats. If you don’t enjoy hunting for resources, you won’t like the game. The resource hunting is never hard, but can be a wee bit tedious. If camera issues are a breaking point, you may find issues with the game sometimes. Going into small enclosed spaces really impacts the camera, and makes it do strange things sometimes. It may be better on PS4, but though the vita game looks great, the characters bulbous heads get in the way sometimes. Also, walls.

*I beat the snot out of that guy. Took 15 minutes or so* If vague descriptions of quests get your goat, you may want to pass. There are usually better descriptions provided by NPCs if you talk to them again, but if you don’t like riddles, some quests will downright piss you off. If you like building items for quests out of resources based on recipes, this game is for you. If the blueprints give you the details and a picture of what you need, but you just CANNOT get it to trigger the completed quest, welcome to Builders. It will piss you off, and it is frequent. There is always a simple solution, but it is rarely obvious. Luckily, we are in the information age, and most people that play this game are very helpful. If you don’t like doing things exactly the way they are asked in order to complete quests, stop here, get Minecraft, go be super creative and shut up about it! This is what I have come against so far, but really nothing that the charm and the pull of the game could not overcome. I’m enjoying myself, and the game has helped breathe new life into my lil PSVita. Now to go smash some dirt and stones to build more walls to my palace of Tristania!
