It’s official. I’m always late to the party.
Titanfall 2 has been out for quite some time now, and I never looked that seriously into it. As the reviews were more and more positive, and more and more content continued to be added, I batted an eyelash. As I saw it on PSN sales for a few weeks, my head turned. Then I forgot about it.
Once I saw a physical copy on sale, I bragged a copy thinking at the worst I would trade it against something else. Based on the campaign alone, that likely won’t be for a while.
I’ll talk on the multiplayer aspect in the next few days for sure. I just need to upload some footage from my forays last night to share my excitement. Multiplayer is the reason I will stay with this game (spoiler- it’s a blast) but the campaign mode is what drew me in to this game in the first place. I’m not happy with buying fully multiplayer shooters anymore, due to the likelihood of the player base dwindling as it ages. Lately, they seem to dwindle even faster, so what’s the point?
Titanfall 2 has a terrific campaign so far though, and by all accounts it will continue to be good as I progress through it. My first impressions were awe at not only how good the game’s environments look, but also at the speed and ease of movement possible. It’s really great to get an accessible parkour-esque movement system from a shooter. Brink tried, and almost succeeded, at producing this years ago, but Titanfall 2 knocks it out of the park. I still have some issues with getting caught on corners, and it would be nice to be able to use the propulsion/jump system to boogie out of danger going backwards, but the range of movement makes me feel like I’m in Attack on Titan. *quick note: I have not played the AoT games, just watched the anime*
I would be happy to just play like this, but those titans!!! BT is fantastic, and I adore the voice acting in this game. Doesn’t matter really what he sounds like though, as the ways he scoops you into the pilot seat, and the gradual display of the mech coming to light when you dock is just gorgeous. The difference in movement and gameplay between pilot and titan is great as well. The game has all the tight shooting mechanics of a CoD game, or better yet Destiny, mixed with the fast paced mech combat of Hawken, all in one very pretty bundle with hyper speed wall running……
I should also note, Hawken was an extreme disappointment for me, so it is also nice to have a game with fast paced mech action, with great designs, controls and customization options. The bad taste of Hawken was definitely something that made me hold off on Titanfall 2.
I don’t want to oversell the game, but man I am having fun with it. Like I said, it’s not perfect. The enemy AI runs the gamut of either non existent/storm trooper shooting to semi prescient/John Wick shooting skills. It is far too easy to get stuck in a weird corner I find. Conversely, it can sometimes be too easy to stick to the wall on rounded objects, messing with the camera and perspective in a very disorienting fashion. There is also a difficulty spike early in the game in a timed survival section where red globe shaped drones constantly chase you and explode when near, while very skilled shooters try to pick you off from afar, and shotgun wielding baddies await you in many areas once you come off your needed wall runs.
Thing is, these are gripes. I am a very positive gamer most of the time, as long as the game delivers a truly enjoyable experience. I have to say, this game has won me over.
I will post some more footage and a write up soon on the multiplayer aspect of the game, but have to boot them up in sharefactory and export them. Could take me a few days due to the omnipresent youtube/ps4 login loop glitch. Wish me luck!
